2010 NATIONAL GREEN DESIGN COMPETITION, EL PASO, TX

The competition team asked the entrants to design affordable senior and family housing on a site in El Paso, TX that would achieve Net Zero energy use and LEED Platinum certification. The concept [dubbed Horseshoe Flats] utilizes pre-fabricated modular construction with photovoltaic panels and wind turbines for on-site energy production, rain water capture and graywater re-use systems, drought tolerant planting, thermal heat chimney effect and through-unit ventilation for passive cooling to achieve the goals. The entry was one of two competition winners.
